What is Breast Cancer?
Breast cancer is a disease in which cells in the breast grow out of control. There are different kinds of breast cancer. The kind of breast cancer depends on which cells in the breast turn into cancer.
Breast cancer can begin in different parts of the breast. A breast is made up of three main parts: lobules, ducts, and connective tissue. The lobules are the glands that produce milk. The ducts are tubes that carry milk to the nipple. The connective tissue (which consists of fibrous and fatty tissue) surrounds and holds everything together. Most breast cancers begin in the ducts or lobules.

Kinds of Breast Cancer
- Invasive ductal carcinoma. The cancer cells begin in the ducts and then grow outside the ducts into other parts of the breast tissue. Invasive cancer cells can also spread, or metastasize, to other parts of the body.
- Invasive lobular carcinoma. Cancer cells begin in the lobules and then spread from the lobules to the breast tissues that are close by. These invasive cancer cells can also spread to other parts of the body.
What Are the Symptoms of Breast Cancer?
Different people have different symptoms of breast cancer. Some people do not have any signs or symptoms at all.
Some warning signs of breast cancer are—
- New lump in the breast or underarm (armpit).
- Thickening or swelling of part of the breast.
- Irritation or dimpling of breast skin.
- Redness or flaky skin in the nipple area or the breast.
- Pulling in of the nipple or pain in the nipple area.
- Nipple discharge other than breast milk, including blood.
- Any change in the size or the shape of the breast.
- Pain in any area of the breast.
Stages of Breast Cancer
Stage 0 – Non-invasive breast cancer occurs when abnormal cells develop in a duct lining or section of the breast.
Stage | – Tumor has a diameter of less than one inch.
Stage || – It has a diameter of 1 to 2 inches and may have spread to nearby lymph nodes.
Stage ||| – A tumor is larger than 2 inches and has spread to an axillary lymph node. You may experience skin changes such as dimpling, inflammation, or color changes.
Stage IV – There is an expansion of cancerous cells in other organs of the body.
Breast Cancer in Men
Breast cancer is most often found in women, but men can get breast cancer too. About 1 out of every 100 breast cancers diagnosed in the United States is found in a man.
The most common kinds of breast cancer in men are the same kinds in women.
Cancer begins in a variety of places in the breast. Many develop in the ducts that carry milk to the nipple (ductal cancers). Others develop in the glands that make breast milk (lobular cancers). Men have these ducts and glands, too, even though they do not have breasts.
A small number of cancers start in other tissues in the breast. These cancers are called sarcomas and lymphomas and are not really thought of as breast cancers.
Most breast lumps are benign (not cancerous). Benign breast tumors are abnormal growths that don’t spread outside of the breast and are not life threatening. You should be checked by your doctor if you notice any changes in your breast.
